Naejangsan National Park

Naejangsan National Park is the most visited place in November as thousands people come to see the colorful autumn leaves when its hitting the peak. Located in Jeollabuk Province, about 3 hours away from Seoul, Naejangsan is the first most recommended place to spend your autumn holiday in Korea.

Just before you reach the main entrance of Naejangsan National Park, you will find Naejangsan Sculpture Park, which is located 15 mins away.

Once you enter the main entrance, you will understand what beauty of autumn is.

After walking for about 30 mins (or taking shuttle ride for 1000 won) you will arrive at Uhwajeong Pavilion (우화정) which is a pavilion in the middle of small lake. This place is located next to the Naejangsan cable car station.

As you keep walking inside the national park, you will see the Naejangsa Temple, about 10 mins walking from the cable car station.

Do not forget to take a closer picture of the maple tree leaves whose form is so lovely yet colorful.

[HowToGetThere]

  • Take bus to Jeongeup Intercity Bus Terminal from Central City Terminal (Honam Line)
  • At the bus terminal, take bus no. 171 and get off at Service Area Naejangsan Bus Terminal (휴게소.버스터미널) Bus Stop.

[Tips]

  • Best time to visit in 2016 is November 9-16
  • Take your own car or go together with travel group (taking public bus by your own is a little bothersome)
  • Come as early as possible (or stay over if possible) since so many people coming to this place, late means you gotta park your car so far away from the entrance or even can’t get seat on the bus.
  • Take the cable car earlier as the queue is longer after the lunch.

3. Deoksugung (덕수궁)

Deoksugung is also famous for its autumn trees which are combined with the magical stone wall. You can also go to a cafe in 13th floor of the building on the left side of Deoksugung to see the colorful scenery from above (free admission). 4. Naejangsan (내장산)

3 hours ride from Seoul will be more than worthied when you can witness the best, the most beautiful, the most colorful, the super amazing view of autumn season in Naejangsan National Park. As far as you can see, you will just see colorful maple trees which makes you even wanna stay for the whole week there. The best time to visit this place is November 8 – November 15. Mungyeong (문경)

Introducing Mungyeong

Another small but beautiful city in North Gyeongsan province Korea, Mungyeong which is only 1 hour away from Andong city.

We came here for the 3rd destination of 2016 Wow Korea Supporters 2nd Trip.

Gurang-ri Rail Bike (구랑리 철로자전거)

Rail bike is one of the most favourite tourist attraction in Korea, as well as what we can visit in Mungyeong. This time, we took the rail bike from Gurang-ri Station.

Beside the Gurang-ri Station, there are some other alternative stations where you can take the rail bike with many choice of courses such as Gaeun Station, Mungyeong Station , and Buljeong Station.

The price is also cheaper than the ones n Gapyeong or Gangcheon, only 25,000 for one rail bike which can take until 4 people.

[HowToGetThere]

  • Take the bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Mungyeong.
  • Take taxi for 15 mins (about 12,000 won)

Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park (문경새재도립공원)

Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park is the provincial park opened in 1981 which overlays Mt. Joryeongsan and was famous as the highest and most dangerous mountain pass on the past. In this provincial park, you can see the beauty of natures, trees, mountainous scenery, water stream and waterfall as well as Hyeguksa Temple.

One of the main spot in Mungyeong Saejae is the Museum of Old Roads (Former Mungyeongsaejae Museum) which offers the history of traditional roads and routes in Korea. It is located exactly nearby the entrance of the mountain pass.

The next main spot is the Mungyeong Saejae KBS Drama Studio, which is located a little bit further, about 20 mins walking from the entrance or 5 mins shuttle ride.

As the largest scale studio in the world, Mungyeong Saejae KBS Drama Studio specializes in historical dramas, where there are three palaces and many houses from the Goryeo Period, spread over in 60,000 m2.

We also managed to the taste the famous local tea, warmly served for us by the tea makers which was soo good.

[HowToGetThere]

  • Take the bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Mungyeong.
  • From Mungyeong Interciy Bus Terminal, take the city bus bound for Mungyeonggwanmun (scheduled every hour) and get off at Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park Parking lot bus stop (about 20 mins ride)

Incheon Grand Park (인천대공원)

Incheon also offers you a magical view of Autumn in Korea in Incheon Grand Park which hit the peak on late October annually (Oct 20-30). In this urban natural park, you can see thousands autumn trees which delight your eyes even from the main entrance.

They also have a mini lake in the centre of the park, surrounded by the colorful autumn trees.

The best time to visit this park is at 7am when you still can see the sun which is still low and there are not many people yet so you can take good pictures in the main spot.

The main spot of Incheon Grand Park is the “Autumn Tree Tunnel” (단풍터널) which can be described only with one word : AMAZING. This place looks like a tunnel or a cave because the autumn trees were placed on both side along the road and the leaves meet above.

As I arrived early in the morning, the sun was still low and the sunlight came through the leaves and branches making the view was even more beautiful

Just beside the lake, you can also have another good spot as they put many rocks where you can sit while enjoy the lake view.

[HowToGetThere]

  • Take subway to Songnae Station (Line 1), and get out from Exit 1.
  • Just in front of the station, you can see the bus stop. Take bus no. 103, 16-1, 909 and get off at Incheon Grand Park.

[Tips]

  • Come early in the morning to get the sunlight come through the tunnel as well as avoid many people pass by to take better pictures.
  • Take picture on the lake first when the sun is still low
  • Use the maximum zoom (any camera or phone) when you take picture of the tunnel to make “blur effect” for the further part of the tunnel.

Suwon’s Kochia Flower Field

Have you ever heard about the Hitachi Seaside Park in Hokkaido, Japan, which famous for the beautiful red kochia flowers? Those amazing flowers also grows in Korea during late September until early October when the temperature is cooling down.

Kochia flower  is tiny, but has bright red color which looks so pretty when you see bunch of them bloom altogether, like a magic red carpet.

A bit late to visit, since some of the flowers were already turning brown, but good camera and good angle can give you such beautiful shot!

Even though the flower field is relatively so small, but still give you a beautiful view to see (since we do not have that much flowers in entire Korea, some in Everland I guess) and amazing pictures to capture.

[HowToGetThere]

  • Take subway Shinbundang Line (Pink) to Sanghyeon Station (상현역)
  • When you get out from exit 2, you gonna see a bus stop just in front of you
  • Take bus no 55 which comes every 15-20 mins
  • After 10 mins riding (4 stops away), get off at Gwanggyo Hosu Gongwon Bus Stop (광교호수공원).
  • You gonna see the field just in front of you

[Tips]

  • Early October would be the best time for visit, I visited on October 18, 2016 when 50% of flowers turned into brown already.
  • Wear soft color clothes (white, pink) to get most beautiful picture among the reds.

Yeongju (영주)

Introducing Yeongju

Yeongju is a city in North Gyeongsan province Korea, (1 hour away from Andong city) which is famous for its Buseoksa Temple

We came here for the 2nd destination of 2016 Wow Korea Supporters 2nd Trip.

Buseoksa Temple

If you like to explore the beauty of temples in Korea, Buseoksa is a perfect destination. Different from other usuall temples, Buseoksa is called “masculine” temple because of its huge size and its beuatiful scenery.

Located 40 mins away from Yeongju city, Buseoksa is also located on the top of hill where you have to walk about 30 mins (1km) to get to the place. But it’s not gonna be hard since you can enjoy the beautiful ginko trees all over the pathway which is turning yellow in October.

Soon you gonna arrive in the main entrance of Buseoksa where you can explore its beauty in many spots.

This temple is called Buseoksa because there is a wide, flat stone which floats above the ground.

  • By BUS, you can take bus from Seoul Central City Terminal to Yeongju (2 hours 20 mins, 15.000 won). From Yeongju Intercity Bus Terminal, across the street and take bus 27 or 55 to Buseoksa (부석사)

Seonbichon Village (선비촌) is a cultural village which preserve the spirit and cultural heritage of Korea’s classical scholars.

Injeolmi Rice Cake Making Experience

Injeolmi rice cake is a Korean traditional kinda cake which is a glutinous rice cake coated with soybean powder. We learnt how to make the rice cake, taught by beloved Korean Grandma and Grandpait, and the best part was when we had those delicious injeolmi rice cake.

Korean Traditional Wedding Ceremony

We also experienced the ritual of Korean traditional wedding ceremony which is done by Korean people long time ago (until now for some people) as our friends acted as the Bride, Groom and even Bridesmaids.

Andong

 Introducing Andong

Andong is the capital of North Gyeongsang Province. Andong is famous for the original dish Andong Jjimdalk, which recently you can also find everywhere in Korea. Andong is also famous for its Hahoe Folk Village (korean traditional houses village) and the International Maskdance Festival which held in October every year.

Andong City is the first destination for the 2016 WOW Korea Supporters 2nd Trip on October 1-3.

Hahoe Mask Museum (하회동 탈 박물관)

Together with Andong Hahoe Folk Village, Hahoe Mask Museum is also UNESCO World Heritage Site and Important Folklore Material No. 122. over the world. This museum displays not only masks from Korea, but masks from all over the world.

This museum opens everyday from 09:30-18:00 with 2000 won entrance fee for adult.

You can also experience making your own korean traditional mask using colorful clas based on your creativity. I tried making my own mask TWICE because it was soo much fun. You can have this experience only with 5000 won.

Andong Hahoe Folk Village [UNESCO World Heritage] (안동 하회마을)

 

Hahoe Folk Village is an area of Korean traditional houses where you can feel the atmosphere of Korea in the old times. Hahoe Folk Village is the home to descendants of the Ryu clan of Pungsan from  Joseon Period.

Hahoe Folk Village was getting more famous after Queen Elizabeth of England visited this village on April 21, 1999.

Hahoe Folk Village is also famous for its cherry-blossoms lined trees which are pinky during spring time. In October, the lined trees are just green, but still pretty isn’t it?

  • Bus 46 bound for Hahoe Village (하회마을) from Andong Bus Terminal or Andong Station (bus 46 runs 10 times a day from 06.20-18.20)
  • If you visit Hahoe Mask Museum first, you can reach Hahoe Folk Village by walking for 5 minutes.

[Tips]

  • Visit here on early April for the pink cherryblossoms
  • This place is similar to the famous Korean Folk Vilage in Jeju Island, so you can visit this place as alternative.

Andong Jjimdak Street (안동 찜닭 골목)

Another famous spot in Andong city is the Jjimdak street where you can find so many restaurants selling the original Andong Jjimdak.

Andong jjimdak is a variety of jjim (a Korean steamed or boiled dish), made with chicken, various vegetables marinated in a ganjang (Korean soy sauce) based sauce.

  • From Andong bus terminal, take bus 11 and get off at 신통의원 (Sin-tong-e-won) bus stop for  22 mins.
  • From Andong station, you can walk for about 500 meter (10 mins)

[Tips]

  • You can order the nonspicy one if you don’t like spicy
  • Eat together with some other friends (1 portion is for 4 people, cost around 25.000 won)
